As you can see from the infographic, sitting for long periods of time is not beneficial to our health. The average American spends 13 hours sitting every day. Here are 6 quick tips you can implement to decrease the amount of time you spend sitting…
- Instead of doing all of your work and reading at a desk, consider doing it while walking slowly on a treadmill, pedaling on a stationary bike, or standing at a high counter top or standing desk.
- If you work in an office and a standing desk is not an option, be the brave person who brings a stability ball for sitting. This will force you to sit with better posture and engage your core muscles while you work.
- Walk or stand when you are talking on the phone, mindlessly looking at social media at the end of the day, and responding to emails on your phone.
- Jump on a mini trampoline, walk on a treadmill, foam roll, stretch, or simply stand when watching TV at home OR get up every commercial break to move around.
- If you spend a lot of time reading, consider listening to books on tape so you can walk or move while you listen.
- Take standing breaks. Every hour, get up for just a few minutes. Fill up your water bottle, go outside, or just take a lap around the office.
Keep in mind that standing 100% of the time is not necessary. In fact, it can put too much strain on your legs. The key is to find a balance. Stand, sit, and repeat.
In my next blog, I will go over how to sit and stand with good form. Stay tuned! 🙂
