This month I went to Las Vegas for Camp Do More hosted by fitness expert and motivational speaker Chalene Johnson. It’s a fun couple of days filled with workouts and lectures. I wanted to share one of my favorite takeaways from Chalene’s lecture.
With whatever goal you are trying to achieve, DO NOT compare yourself with others and go at your own pace! In life, people are always going to compare you to other people. I’m sure people who see my YouTube videos compare me to other artists. They may say I’m not as talented or as pretty as other singers, but I choose not to engage in that dialogue. Life is not a competition. Take your time on your journey and go at a pace that is right for you. Comparing yourself to others will block you from achieving authentic happiness in life. You’ll always find someone prettier, smarter, richer, and skinnier than you if you look for it. However, you don’t know their story!
For example, if you are trying to lose weight or live a healthier lifestyle, you may find yourself comparing your body to someone you follow on social media, a friend, or a co-worker and wondering why you can’t have what they have. They could have anything from an eating disorder to innately healthy habits or just good genes! You don’t know their journey, their sacrifices, and what the rest of their life is like. All you can know is what’s best for YOU. It is okay to look for mentors and role models. If you know someone who has achieved success in an area in which you wish to succeed, it’s perfectly acceptable to learn from them and emulate them. Just remember, your uniqueness and your story is beautiful!
